What is IVF?

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is a fertility treatment where eggs are retrieved from a woman’s ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a lab. The resulting embryos are monitored, and the healthiest one is transferred into the uterus to achieve pregnancy.

What Are the 5 Stages of IVF?

The IVF journey is typically divided into five key stages. Each stage plays a vital role in increasing the chances of successful pregnancy.

1. Ovarian Stimulation

This is the first stage of IVF, where fertility medications are given to the woman to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs instead of the one that usually develops each month.

  • Daily hormone injections for 8–14 days
  • Regular ultrasounds and blood tests to monitor follicle growth
  • The goal is to produce multiple high-quality eggs for retrieval

2. Egg Retrieval (Ovum Pick-Up)

Once the follicles are ready, a trigger injection is given to mature the eggs. After 34–36 hours, the eggs are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure under anesthesia.

  • The procedure takes 15–30 minutes
  • It’s done using ultrasound-guided aspiration
  • The eggs are immediately taken to the lab for fertilization

3. Fertilization and Embryo Development

In the IVF lab, the retrieved eggs are combined with the partner’s or donor’s sperm. The fertilized eggs are then monitored for several days to allow embryo development.

  • Traditional IVF or ICSI (where a single sperm is injected into each egg) is used
  • Embryos are observed for 3–5 days
  • The healthiest embryo(s) are selected for transfer

4. Embryo Transfer

The best-quality embryo is selected and transferred into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter.

  • The procedure is painless and takes only a few minutes
  • No anesthesia is required
  • A hormone called progesterone is given to support the uterine lining

5. Pregnancy Test & Follow-Up

After 10–14 days, a blood test is done to check for pregnancy hormones (hCG). If the result is positive, follow-up ultrasounds and blood work are scheduled to confirm and monitor the pregnancy.

  • If successful, prenatal care begins
  • If unsuccessful, your doctor will review options for the next step (frozen embryo transfer, second cycle, etc.)
