Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as OB-GYN (Obstetrics and Gynecology), which is a broad field covering all aspects of women’s health. Obstetricians are responsible for the care of the pregnant woman, the unborn baby, labor and delivery, and the immediate period following childbirth. They ensure that both mother and child get the best prenatal care to ensure labor and delivery are accomplished without complications and that should intervention be needed, it is done quickly and safely.
